Despite an unsteady preseason showing, Spencer Rattler has apparently retained his trade value. That was a surprising development considering how it felt like his stock took a hit, and the New Orleans Saints have maintained their stance of retaining him as Tyler Shough's backup. At the least, they haven't found the compensation they're looking for to deal him yet
The Jacksonville Jaguars just acquired Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins, and all it cost them was a sixth round pick two years down the line in 2028. Prior to trading for Ewers, the Jaguars inquired about Rattler's availability, per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill. Ironically, one Jaguars expert was calling for the team to trade for Wilson a couple weeks ago.
The Saints drafted Rattler in the fifth round, and he is a serviceable backup. They were never going to deal him for a pick that was lower than where they initially selected him. That would be a depreciation for a player that should have appreciated in value since draft day.
The only question now is do the Saints keep Spencer Rattler AND Zach Wilson?
The fact the Saints didn't want to trade Rattler is all the proof necessary to tell fans who won the battle between him and Zach Wilson. If Wilson was ahead of him on the depth chart, the Saints wouldn't be selective in what kind of compensation
Rattler's preseason certainly wasn't pretty, but it ended on a high note. It was ugly against the Jaguars. It was largely because Wilson outshined him in that game but also because Rattler failed to find any success even intermediately down the field and had a bad fumble.
No one played well against the Rams, and Rattler had one of the worst moments on a 100 yard pick-six. Against the Cowboys, Rattler found his poise and command of the offense. He led scoring drives on three of the true four drives he had in the game.
The battle between Rattler and Wilson was tight. Rattler had the better game in the finale, so in a what have you done for me lately world, Rattler's strong performance is fresh on the brain. The question becomes what's next for Wilson?
The Saints eventually had three quarterbacks on the roster but started off with just two last year at roster cuts. It's up in the air what they'll do this year, and it could genuinely go either way.
Wilson played well enough to keep on the team. He showed a knack for going downfield and hit on a few big plays. He didn't sustain it enough to beat out Rattler, but Wilson still has more experience than Rattler and Shough combined.
If Kellen Moore wanted to keep Wilson as a designated "older" guy in the quarterback room, and older is used as lightly as possible, it would be understandable. It just has to work for roster numbers. If it doesn't, the Saints could always agree to bring back Wilson once they make a couple moves, without having to worry about him making it through waivers since he's a veteran.
