New Orleans Saints cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry has had a rocky year, but he has a golden opportunity to rebound against Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf. Beyond helping determine the outcome on Sunday, McKinstry’s performance will have significant ramifications for his future. Largely, whether he’s their long-term defensive ace.
McKinstry had high expectations in 2026. However, he’s been mediocre so far, allowing a 100.6 passer rating when targeted. Now, questions about his role are emerging, mainly whether the Saints need to find his replacement.
Luckily for McKinstry, the season isn’t over. He has a pristine chance to change the narrative and emphasize that he’s a shutdown cornerback. His redemption tour starts in Paris on Sunday.
DK Metcalf is a challenging, yet advantageous matchup for Kool-Aid McKinstry
DK Metcalf had a slow start, not surpassing 40 yards in the first three weeks, but is rapidly gaining steam. He had a 115-yard performance in week four and an impressive 11 receptions for 93 yards last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Still, he’s an inconsistent player, as his stats indicate. He’s been held under 31 yards three times this season, which stems from his route running. McKinstry can mitigate Metcalf by staying in his hip pocket and not allowing any room after the catch.
Despite this, Metcalf is a dangerous matchup with his staggering frame and physicality. Even while covered, he’s dominant at the catch point and bullies smaller defenders. With this, it’s pivotal that McKinstry stays composed when targeted and breaks up the pass.
It’s irrational to assume that McKinstry will hold Metcalf receptionless. That’s not how the third-year cornerback will be graded. Instead, it’s vital that he doesn’t allow explosive plays and doesn’t commit unnecessary penalties.
Doing this will change the direction of McKinstry’s 2026 campaign.
McKinstry hasn’t had an easy season, facing Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St Brown, Malik Nabers, and Drake London, but the star cornerback’s job is to match up against opposing threats and limit them. It’s time that he steps up and shuts down an offense’s number one option.
Because of this, the time is ticking for McKinstry. The former second-round pick will be an unrestricted free agent in 2028, meaning he’s looking for a contract extension this offseason. It will be tough for the front office to warrant spending top-market running on an inconsistent cornerback.
It’s too early to decide anything now, but Kool-Aid McKinstry must improve to ensure his future in New Orleans. Fortunately for him, he has a golden opportunity against DK Metcalf and the Pittsburgh Steelers in week seven.
