The New Orleans Saints selected Kelvin Banks Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This choice was hardly talked about, being viewed as a “safe” and “boring” pick. Regardless of this, Banks had an impressive rookie season and proved he can be a franchise cornerstone. Because of this, he's the non-QB Rookie of the Year for the Saints.
It’s essential to note that Tyler Shough wasn’t included in these awards. He’s gotten all of the attention, deservingly so, but it’s important the impact of these other rookies isn’t understated. The Saints had an elite 2025 draft class that went beyond selecting their potential franchise quarterback.
Banks quietly had an elite season. There were far more storylines on the Saints other than a steady left tackle, but he was a major contributor on the offense, especially during the final stretch. The offensive line caught a lot of slack, but that was mainly towards the interior, Taliese Fuaga and Banks unfortunately got grouped in with it.
Consistency was the key for Kelvin Banks
Banks wasn’t flashy, but he was consistent. He started in all 17 games for the Saints and was pivotal in their late season success. Obviously it wasn’t perfect; every rookie is going to struggle in certain moments, but Banks showed he has the ability to be a star in both run and pass protection.
His ability should give Saints fans optimism for the future. Both Banks and Fuaga are still developing, but the future is bright for the offensive line. As of now, it appears they have their future tackle tandem and won’t have to invest at the position anymore.
Overall, it’s a tough call for rookie of the year, but Kelvin Banks narrowly takes the cake. His consistency and potential for the future creates a bright outlook for the Saints future.
