The New Orleans Saints were brutally embarrassed 44-13 in their week 3 road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. From start to finish the Saints were outmatched in every phase of the game.
The Saints found themselves trailing 38-3 with 3 seconds left in the first half and facing a 1st and goal at the 5 yard line. Head coach Kellen Moore made an interesting decision to settle for a field goal, resulting in the team trailing by 32 going into the half.
Moore stood by his decision after the game. “Just taking points at that point, we've just got to get some momentum going our way. Obviously, we knew it was an uphill battle at that point and we're going to have to be really perfect to have any chance moving forward. We just needed to get something going." Moore's explanation left many fans very frustrated.
Kellen Moore's decision may have left some questioning but the Saints were already in No Man's Land
The Saints were overwhelmed on both sides of the ball, Moore recognized that the game was out of reach. To stop the bleeding, he opted to take three points and give the team somewhat of a positive ending to the first half. While many disagree with the decision, Moore’s choice reflected a reasonable decision as things had already slipped out of the Saints control
Points were extremely difficult to come by the entire afternoon, the Saints only registered 3 points on their first 6 drives, before Moore’s conservative decision to kick a field goal before just before halftime. The Saints dug themselves a massive hole with costly mistakes. Their offensive drives up to that point resulted in a turnover on downs, two three and outs, a blocked punt, and a field goal.
By then, the game was spiraling out of control, the lack of rythm on offense was glaring and the inability to capitalize on the few opportunities that they had made matters worse. Every drive seemed to have the Saints stuck in neutral, while the Seahawks kept their foot on the gas.
