Spencer Rattler had the Saints offense driving... until he didn't. Bringing the ball from the team's own 29-yard line to the red zone, a crucial fourth-quarter drive fell apart when Rattler made his biggest mistake of the preseason on an interception to Jaguars cornerback Keni-H Lovely.
Postgame, Rattler called the interception a funky play. "They gave us the perfect look for the throw, me and (Mason) Tipton weren't on the same page. We're both kind of sick about that one." His new head coach also called it a tricky play. "We'll evaluate and see what the picture truly looked like, but in the moment it felt like he was giving us a good opportunity by making that throw." Moore said to the media postgame. "The corner made a really good play."
Almost at a loss for words, Mason Tipton blamed himself for the turnover. "I don't know what to say. I was really mad. That's a play I've got to make." He said to the media postgame. "Spencer (Rattler) ended up throwing an interception, and that's my fault."
Saints QB Spencer Rattler shows his resilience against the Jaguars
Despite the interception, Spencer Rattler was not rattled. Maybe that has something to do with what his head coach told him on the sidelines. Following the 17-17 draw, Kellen Moore said that he reminded Rattler that it's all about how you respond.
And boy, did he ever. On the drive following the interception, which was effectively the Saints' last shot at tying the game, Ratter completed seven out of eight passes for 76 yards and one touchdown. On the ensuing two-point conversion, he would run it in for two. Afterwards, he would call the run a good play. "Down there, you gotta extend and scramble. They kind of let me leak out, and I saw the edge and just hit it."
Rattler would play the entire second half on Sunday afternoon. When the clock hit zero, he had completed 18/24 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.
