Jordyn Tyson once again didn’t participate as the New Orleans Saints opened up mandatory minicamps. The reason? Tyson is in the rehab process, per Kellen Moore.
Under some circumstances that wouldn’t be concerning, but the entire conversation around Tyson during the draft cycle was based on his current injury and injury history. His final year at Arizona State ended early due to a hamstring injury.
Tyson has also had previous larger injuries, but we’ve seen him since those injuries. The hamstring injury took precedence over the other injuries because it was most recent and it took him out of the entire pre-draft cycle until he hosted his own personal Pro Day. After the event, it seemed like concerns slightly diminished. The Saints’ handling of Tyson won’t allow concerns to be completely squashed.
Saints keeping Jordyn Tyson out: Concern or caution?
If it’s strictly a cautionary process, you have to wonder when they’ll stop being cautionary and let him practice. Former Saints quarterback Bobby Herbert is wondering the same thing.
Hebert used Deion Sanders as a rare example of a player who is able to not practice. "There’s very few people that are on that level. Now, is our No. 1 draft at that level?" Hebert said. "He don’t have to practice? Come on, that ham has been in the oven and it’s baking. You know, it’s got to be cooked by now.”
Not needing practice aside, Herbert’s speculation is on the money. You’d think the hamstring was good enough for him to be on the field by now. And there’s value in him practicing, so it makes the caution even more curious.
If it’s some sort of setback, that doesn’t bode well for Tyson. Hamstrings can be pesky and recurring. That’s the reason a cautious approach feels like an option. A setback could mean we may not see Tyson in training camp either. That’ll be the true benchmark on whether it’s a caution or concern.
Tyson is moving well from a clip from the second day of minicamp. That suggests it’s just the team being precautionary and should calm some worries his absence may have formed. Hebert, like most Saints fans, just wants to see Tyson on the field.
