Jordyn Tyson left the New Orleans Saints' joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars with a hamstring injury that isn't expect to be major. Whether it keeps him out for any time or not, Tyson's injury couldn't have made Devaughn Vele's value any more clear.
It being a hamstring injury after that same injury kept Saints fans from seeing their first round pick all offseason certainly adds to the concern. Tyson's injury history is well documented in the same way Chris Olave's concussion history is common knowledge. There's going to be some level of worry around those players health at all times because of that history.
There shouldn't be any worry about who the Saints will turn to if Tyson, or Olave, has to miss time. Vele showed what he could do at the end of the season when finally given some time. It's the reason Kellen Moore's biggest regret is not getting Vele involved earlier.
Devaughn Vele is a bit of the forgotten man in the Saints receiving corps
It'll be thrown out there that Vele is having a good camp, but he's the fifth most talked about wide receiver on the team. Olave just got a new contract, and he's the Saints' top receiver. Then comes the rookies.
The Saints drafted three rookie wide receivers this year, and all of them are standing out. There's so much going on at the position that it makes sense why Vele could get lost in the shuffle, but Tyson's injury is a reminder of just how quick Vele could become the second receiving threat. It's also a good time to remember he's quite capable of being that.
Vele didn't get involved in the offense until late in the season, but when he did, his presence was felt. He was the leading receiver against the Dolphins, and his final three games of the year were littered with big plays.
Vele had an impressive touchdown in the back corner of the end zone versus Miami. He showed his catch radius and ability to go across the middle with two key third and long conversions on scoring drives.
Vele's production had highlights and just valuable plays. He'll obviously be a big part of the offense in 2026. He should also be viewed as a receiver to depend on and trust as the secondary threat if Tyson does have to miss time at any point.
