The New Orleans Saints signed running back Travis Etienne to a four year $52 million deal, addressing the hole at the position.  The move gives the Saints a dynamic-three down running back who can change the game on the ground and in the passing game.

Carlos Sanchez of the Black & Teal points out that despite dealing with outside noise, Etienne still found ways to stay productive and make an impact.  It’s a testament to his ability to block out distractions and deliver when it matters most.

“After missing his rookie campaign with a Lisfranc injury, Travis Etienne totaled more than 1,400 yards from scrimmage in back-to-back season. However, he suffered a shoulder injury in 2024 that hindered his production. Couple that with the fact that a new regime took over last year, and the former Clemson Tiger was suddenly the subject of offseason speculation.  However, Etienne didn't let the noise affect him and went on to register the third 1,000-yard season of his career and 13 total touchdowns.”

Travis Etienne’s change of scenery could be Saints game changer

The Jaguars truly valued Etienne and what he brought to their offense, but with younger backs emerging and ready for larger roles, they had ascending options that made the transition easier.  Sometimes roster evaluations create difficult decisions.

For the Saints, Etienne is everything that they needed at the position.  His speed, explosiveness, and versatility could really provide the consistent spark their run game has been lacking. A change of scenery and a secured role can redefine a players narrative.  Etienne has the talent to remind people why he was once viewed as a cornerstone back.

In the Saints system, Etienne's burst through the hole, ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, and knack for explosive gains make him an ideal fit.  His versatility aligns with Kellen Moores offensive philosophy that values running backs who can impact the game on all three downs. Etienne’s time in Jacksonville was impressive, but it didn’t lead to a new contract.  A fresh start in New Orleans gives him the chance to build on that success and show just how special he can be in the right system.

The Saints struggled to maintain a consistent running game since the 2020 season, when they ranked 7th in the NFL. To address this, they've invested in a running back who has proven to be reliable, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in 75% of his career seasons. Etienne bring stabulity to a position that has been inconsistent in recent years. With him in the backfield, the Saints running game finally has a reliable foundation.
