Terron Armstead shared a pair of stories from his rookie year, and they had a common theme. Sean Payton and Armstead doubting whether or not Armstead was built for this moment. Both of these stories ocurred before he took a real snap for the New Orleans Saints. In each story, the now-Saints Hall of Famer responded accordingly.

Payton has been a master motivator for years. It's impossible to say he knew exactly what would have been the outcome, but it was certainly a calculated move. The comments tested Armstead's mental resolve. If he folded, then the Saints just move on and weed out the weak. That didn't happen, and the result was a team Hall of Fame career.

Sean Payton's challenge lit a fire under Terron Armstead

The first time Payton questioned if Armstead was ready for this level was in OTAs. "I'm struggling in OTAs, and Sean Payton's telling me I might not belong here. I'm like, 'Damn, you might be right' I don't know yet," Armstead relayed. "I had to respond not only to myself but I had to let his ass that I do belong, for sure. And for a long time."

The next time was in the first game of the preseason. Per Armstead, it was his third snap and he missed a block. Payton came to him and said, "you might not be good enough to be here." No elaboration or conversation, Payton just walked away after the comment.

Armstead had the same reaction many fans probably had when hearing it. "Damn, why would you say that?" Over a decade later, he can admit that comment worked. We may only be looking at this in a favorable light because it did work. If Armstead's career went a different direction and he shared this story, it may be taken much different.

Payton planting a seed of doubt in Armstead’s head twice before his first regular season game would have broken some rookies. It’s actually amazing it didn’t break Armstead. It isn’t a situation where he had such unwavering confidence in himself that this didn’t sway him. Armstead openly wondered if Payton was correct each time but responded appropriately each time.
