Just a month ago, former New Orleans Saints defensive back Chauncey "CJ" Gardner-Johnson without a job. Now, he is lighting it up with a coach that some thought he might not be with ever again.
To be specific, that coach is the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who was Gardner-Johnson defensive coordinator back when he was wearing black and gold. Due to the bad breakup between New Orleans and Gardner-Johnson, many thought that he and Allen might not cross paths again. Well, it looks like time really does heal all wounds.
In the two games in navy and orange, the Super Bowl LIX champion has gathered 15 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble. "It's just a blessing to be here," Ceedy said in the locker room after the Bears took down the Giants. "I was home for a month and a half. The narratives, the scrutiny... but when you're with a great group of people. great group of coaches that believe in you, I think all of that goes out the window when they see the person and you come in ready to play."
For CJ Gardner-Johnson, he's going back to his roots
CJ Gardner-Johnson got his start in New Orleans playing close to the line of scrimmage as a nickelback. Reunited with Allen, Gardner-Johnson is back to playing in the slot. It's something that he hasn't done much since leaving the Crescent City, especially as he's moved further back into the defensive backfield as a safety.
Going back to his roots is bringing out a vintage version of Gardner-Johnson and is something that is much needed for him after the way his 2025 season started. In just two games with the Bears, the defensive back has already recorded 15 tackles, 3 sacks and a forced fumble. He came into the season with four career sacks, and he's set a single season career-high in just two games.
Following his release by the Ravens, Gardner-Johnson took to social media. "I just want to take a moment to thank all the teams I’ve been a part of, coaches, teammates, and everyone who’s supported me along the way," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "...I’m truly grateful for all the opportunities and memories. Football has always been a big part of who I am, and my passion for the game is still strong. I’m excited to keep working, improving, and continuing to play the sport I love."
Gardner-Johnson promised improvement and delivered. Quickly making a name for himself in Chicago, he seems to have found a place to stay for a while. Brought into the NFL by Dennis Allen, it's Allen who is giving him the opportunity to stay in the NFL.
