The New Orleans Saints have started Spencer Rattler at quarterback for all seven of their games in the 2025 regular season. It's been a mixed bag for the second-year signal caller, as he had taken care of the football in the first six games but the team just couldn't quite get over the hump in all but one of their games.
In Rattler's seventh start of the season, he struggled to do the one thing he had been doing a good job of, turning the ball over four times in Chicago against the Bears. Rattler threw three picks and lost one fumble and those turnovers then led to the Bears scoring 10 additional points. The Saints lost by eight points. You do the math there.
It was a rough game for Rattler and naturally, fans are going to question if it's time to turn things over to second-round rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. Former NFL quarterback Matt Flynn is not happy with those people questioning if Rattler is good enough, however, posting on X, "I am concerned about the overall football iq of the people saying Rattler sucks".
Matt Flynn has Spencer Rattler's back even after brutal start vs. Bears
Flynn clearly didn't like seeing people bad mouth Rattler even on a day where he didn't play well. The former Packers, Seahawks, and Raiders quarterback didn't hesitate to stick up for Rattler here and wanted everyone on the X scene to know that he had the former South Carolina product's back.
Through the first seven games of the season, Rattler has thrown for 1,450 yards, eight touchdowns, and four picks. His numbers aren't terrible by any means but the Saints are also 1-6 on the year. The former fifth-round selection has just one win under his belt since entering the league last year and it's going to take a lot more from him to stave off Shough and keep his starting job.
For what it's worth, head coach Kellen Moore said that he didn't consider switching to Shough in the game even with Rattler's tough day at the office. Will Moore continue to have faith in his quarterback if Rattler has another bad game against the Buccaneers next week? We'll have to wait until next week to get the answer to that question.
For now though, Rattler has at least one vocal supporter with no ties to the Saints. Flynn has made his thoughts on the Saints quarterback situation clear and we'll see if he ends up being right.
