The New Orleans Saints appear to be set at center with Erik McCoy penciled in as the starter heading into the 2026 season.  But while the top of the depth chart may feel secure, the bigger question is what lies behind him. Do the Saints have reliable options ready to step up if an injury struck? McCoy has fallen to injuries in each of the last two seasons, so they need an answer to that question.

With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, the Saints could look to solidify the backup center position by adding depth through a mid to late round selection.  However, head coach Kellen Moore expressed confidence in the options already on the roster.

“We do have some guys who play the guard position that have played for us the last year, year-and-a-half that could probably transition into center,” Moore said. “We’ll give those guys opportunities through the offseason. And we’ll see where it takes us.”

Torricelli Simpkins provides New Orleans Saints with reliable in house option at backup center

Torricelli Simpkins is a versatile option along the offensive line eho has the ability to step in at center for the New Orleans Saints on their current depth chart.  As a rookie in 2025, he appeared in three games during weeks 3-5, providing valuable depth while the Saints dealt with injuries to Trevor Penning, Dillon Radunz, and Cesar Ruiz.

Simpkins earned his spot on the Saints roster as an undrafted  free agent out of South Carolina, turning heads throughout training camp.  His most impressive outing during that stretch was in their week 1 preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.  He dropped back 54 times, allowing only one pressure without surrendering a sack.

He proved that he could be a depth piece on an NFL roster, not only with a strong preseason but also by stepping in early during the regular season when his number was called.  His ability to fill in across the interior line gives the Saints valuable flexibility and a dependable in house option if injuries occur.  Simpkins could represent more than a camp story, with continued development he could become a trusted option already in the building.
