Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is viewed as a consensus top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, draft analyst Mike Mayock isn’t sold on his traits. Don't let Mayock speak for the class. Downs is a fantastic prospect and could help the New Orleans Saints fill the role that Alontae Taylor left.

“I’m not as high as a lot of people in the safety from Ohio State,” Mayock said, “I love him as a player, but I don’t see him as a dynamic difference maker. So, I don’t see him as a top-10 pick.”

Everyone’s entitled to their own belief, but saying Caleb Downs isn’t a dynamic difference maker is irrational. He’s everywhere on Ohio State’s defense and was a key reason they were so successful. Downs' versatility allows him to line up all over the field, forcing the quarterback to identify and beware of him constantly. His natural instincts are superb, which helps him always be near the ball. Hardly a play goes by where Downs isn’t leaving his footprint.

Caleb Downs would be the Alontae Taylor replacement for the Saints

Taylor signing with the Tennessee Titans creates a void at the STAR role in Brandon Staley’s defense. This isn’t a conventional position, but it's basically a hybrid between a cornerback, linebacker, and safety.

This player is expected to cover slot receivers and tight ends, fly downhill to defend the run, and blitz the quarterback. This is a complex position, which limits the amount of players who thrive in it, however, Downs possesses all of these traits. It's what makes him a perfect fit and be the successor to Taylor.

What makes Downs an ideal prospect for the STAR role is his strong IQ mixed with elite traits. The former Buckeye is always the smartest player on the field. He understands his responsibility, no matter where he lines up. What makes Downs special is this mental prowess paired with his aforementioned traits and impact. Downs is an amazing athlete, which lets him impact the game on a regular basis.

Downs, like any prospect, will have his haters. However, he would be a fantastic selection at number eight, who can thrive in the STAR role and elevate the defense.
