There isn't a voice in New Orleans Saints history that carries more weight than Drew Brees, and hearing the greatest player in franchise history praise your current coach can create more belief from the fan base.
Brees told reporters during the opening of Surge entertainment, Moore "belongs here. I think he’s great for this organization right now with where we are.”
This is Moore's first year as a head coach, but he's been in the public eye for a long time. His ascension from player to positional coach to offensive coordinator and now head coach have all been well documented. Part of that was because he was coaching with the Dallas Cowboys. The media circus that accompanies that franchise amplified the story of Moore going directly from backup quarterback to quarterbacks coach.
The other reason Moore has constantly been in the public eye is his success as a collegiate quarterback. Moore is the winningest quarterback in college football history. He was the first player in Boise State history to be a finalist for the Heisman trophy.
Kellen Moore's QB background helps him as a coach
Boise State was one of the best Cinderella teams we've saw in college football during Moore's time there. Brees, like many, watched Moore lead the Broncos into battle. “They were always going in as underdogs and beating teams they had no business being on the field with back when he was playing," Brees said.
That's an accurate description of what Moore walked into as a college quarterback and what he will be faced with in his debut season with the Saints. New Orleans is only favored in one game this season. We'll see if Moore can defy expectations yet again.
During his time at Boise State, Brees saw multiple traits that translate well into coaching. He described Moore as "one of these methodical guys that you could see he had moxie. He had leadership skills. Obviously, he was a clutch performer. He’s just carried over all those traits to being a coach."
If you can't lead a team, you can't be a coach. That's basic math. You want someone who can command the troops. Doing it as a quarterback is a little different, but it is certainly a trait that needs to transfer. His methodical nature and ability to remain steady in big moments are more traits that good coaches possess. Brees sees all of those things in Kellen Moore, the quarterback, and Kellen Moore, the coach.
