One of the most intriguing positional battles for the New Orleans Saints this offseason is the fight for running back three. Travis Etienne Jr. and Alvin Kamara are the clear-cut top two; however, that third spot is up for grabs. The leading contender was second-year running back Devin Neal, but a recent injury has sidelined him, creating an opportunity for the other options.

Neal suffered a minor injury last week and is currently rehabbing. The injury itself and the duration of his absence are unknown, but he is missing pivotal snaps. It’s important to note that he could be fully healthy next week, but we don’t know. What we do know is that other options are playing. Kendre Miller is still recovering from his torn ACL last year, but is participating. Additionally, Audric Estime, Ty Chandler, and CJ Donaldson are active.

With everyone else seeing snaps, Neal is losing traction in the race. He was effective when given carries in 2025, racking up 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his 57 carries, but so was Estime. Similarly, Miller has been outstanding when healthy. Because of these contenders, Neal must get healthy so the coaching staff can get a clear view of who they want to continue with.

This injury makes training camp and the preseason critical for the running backs’ evaluation.

Neal missing time evens the count and gives everyone a fair playing field heading into training camp on July 29. Nothing’s certain, but it’s extremely likely that he is fully healthy and ready to compete. As a result, everyone will be under a microscope, with the coaching staff paying close attention to find their backup running back.

Additionally, this makes the preseason the deciding factor. Etienne and Kamara won’t play, opening the door for the other contributors. Obviously, they won't be facing starting defenses, but the coaching staff will heavily value these in-game snaps and this will play a large role in deciding the battle.

Although fans are hopeful to hear an answer soom, they will have to be patient to hear the winner, especially after these injuries. The battle is wide open, only time will tell who takes command and grabs a roster spot.
