Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back, Bucky Irving, surprised many in his rookie season and recorded over 1000 rushing yards. Bleacher Report's Matt Holder listed six rookie running backs who could have a similar level of impact and surprise from this year's draft class, one of them being New Orleans Saints sixth round pick, Devin Neal.
Devin Neal complements and frees up Alvin Kamara
Holder notes how the style of Neal should complement Alvin Kamara’s. Neal will likely fill in the “workhorse” role for the Saints. He has experience in this role, reaching over 150 carries four straight years at Kansas. This will free up Kamara to be the change of pace, receiving back. This style has worked well for the Saints in the past with the tandem of Mark Ingram and Kamara.
Neal still needs to prove his worth to get significant touches. He will be amidst a position battle with 2023 third-round pick Kendre Miller for the spot behind Kamara. Although Miller hasn’t stayed healthy, he’s shown potential while on the field. This is a battle to keep an eye on during offseason workouts.
The Saints offensive line wasn’t anything to write home about in 2024. However, they have some maulers who can pave the way for the rushing attack in 2025. Holder points out how the projected starting offensive line are all formidable run blockers capable of paving lanes.
Holder missed one key factor when explaining why Neal could flourish in the Saints offense, which is their new head coach. Kellen Moore hasn’t hidden his affection for the run game. In his six years of being an offensive coordinator, Moore’s teams rushed for an average of 2,175 yards. This was highlighted in 2024 with Saquan Barkely reaching over 2,000 yards by himself. Even with Neal splitting carries, he will still have ample opportunities.
Neal has the opportunity, coaching and personnel needed for him to thrive in New Orleans. There’s no reason why the former Jayhawk shouldn’t shine in the black and gold.
