The offseason has been hectic for Derek Carr, and the chaos has centered around his health and future in New Orleans. We haven’t heard much from Derek directly. It feels like his brother, David Carr, has been a mouthpiece for him publicly.
The New Orleans Saints officially filed Carr’s retirement on Tuesday, and now we have finally comments from Carr on his decision. He says he wanted to help the team out.
Derek Carr reveals why he retired
In an interview with Front Office Sports, Derek spoke out for himself. He spoke about leaving $30 million on the table. "That part was tough because I didn’t want to have surgery and just sit there and—it sounds crazy but—just take the Saints money," Carr said. He chose the other route. Carr retired and left the Saints with more salary cap wiggle room.
This isn’t a new story. This is what was said when Carr first retired. The amount of money the Saints saved due to Carr’s retirement jumps off the page, and the many quickly labeled this a stand up move by Carr.
Time went on and questions began to raise if this was truly a selfless move or something Carr was pushed to do. Carr has given his side, and we will never get something this concrete from the Saints’ side. Speculation will run rampant, but this is all we’ll get on the story.
Life after football for Derek Carr
Carr is retired, and that’s not changing. Fans aren’t the only ones questioning if Carr has played his last snap. Even those close to Carr have had their doubts.
Carr’s agent texted him recently to see if Carr was content with calling it quits. Carr relayed the story saying, “I sent him a picture of me on the beach with my two kids playing. And I said, ‘This beats an OTA any day.’”
It’s over. Carr is done playing but thinks transitioning to media like his brother is likely. David Carr is a part of NFL Network, but Derek sees himself “doing it at the college level.” Whether it's on the TV or on his Carr brothers' Youtube page, it seems Carr will be doing media in his post-playing career.
