Week 7 wasn't just an ordinary game for the New Orleans Saints. This was an opportunity to make a statement.
Former Saints head coach Dennis Allen was fired by the team but it didn't long for him to land on his feet as the Chicago Bears' new defensive coordinator under Ben Johnson. For that reason, this was a chance at revenge for Allen, and that's exactly what the Bears helped give him.
Chicago won by a score of 26-14 while Allen's Bears defense came up with four takeaways, four sacks and allowed New Orleans to go for just 44 yards rushing on the day. In the Bears' locker room afterwards, Allen got the very first game ball from Johnson and had a speech prepared for his moment.
"Sometimes, you ain't good enough for somewhere else. That's perfectly fine," he went on. "I love being here. And I love being with this group of guys."
Dennis Allen took a huge shot at the Saints after the Bears won in Week 7
Well, on one hand, he's right. Saints fans had long grown sick of Allen and his inability to be a legitimate NFL head coach. He was in that position for far too long when being a defensive coordinator actually suited him much better.
To be a successful head coach, you've got to earn respect. Allen didn't exactly inspire everyone in that Saints locker room. Just ask Kendre Miller and he'll tell you like it is.
"Sometimes the good Lord just has a freakin' plan for you that you don't know about," Allen also said.
Well, it wasn't just the Lord who knew about the initial part of that plan. Every Saints fan, in their right mind, knew he was getting fired. The only question was, why did it take so long? Nevertheless, Micky Loomis made the right call in the end, and Allen was sent packing.
Now, in the spirit of humanity, good for Allen that he landed on his feet and gets to do what he's done at a high level for quite some time now. He was never cut out to be a head coach, but to give credit where credit is due, Allen is a great defensive coordinator.
It's just unfortunate that he showed his chops against the Saints in a way that was a tough watch for New Orleans fans.
