Demario Davis' next move is painfully obvious after the latest report

Ahead of free agency, Demario Davis going to the Chicago Bears makes a lot of sense if he leaves the New Orleans Saints. Chicago checks many of Davis' boxes, and they could pursue Davis more aggressively due to recent reports. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Bears have given their standout linebacker Tremaine Edmunds permission to seek a trade. That's bad news for the Saints, because now a Demario Davis move to Chicago makes more sense for both sides.

The Bears defense is now set to lose the player who was their primary communicator on defense last season. A crucial part of the team as their middle linebacker as well, his shoes will be big ones to fill. Demario Davis will be able to do that easily due to the fact that Chicago's defense is run by Dennis Allen, Davis' defensive play caller from 2018-2024.

That makes the Bears the Saints' biggest competitor. The Bears are also expected to have more cap space available to them than New Orleans, making it a worrisome scenario for this offseason. The Saints won't be able to win a bidding war, if that's what it comes to. Furthermore, Chicago is set to make a run for the playoffs after making it to the divisional round last season. The Saints have a tougher road to the big game and might be a less-than-ideal spot for the veteran linebacker.

Saints LB Demario Davis already has one foot out the door

While Demario Davis is an icon on the team and has been one of the best players on the team for nearly the past decade, his return to the Saints is no guarantee. In January, he had an interview on the Up and Adams show where he insinuated that he had one foot on the other side of the fence already.

Kay Adams asked him directly where he was in the process of being a Saint next season. "Yeah, I'm coming back to the NFL. I'm super excited about that," Davis responded. "As I'm watching these playoff games, I'm looking at some of these defenses, and I think a lot of these defenses are just one good player away from taking that next step. You really need a general in the middle that can see that. That's what I think I bring the most value."

It surely sounds like Davis will at least listen to what other teams have to offer. That could spell disaster for the Saints, who would not only lose Davis' production on the field but also his presence in the locker room.
