Tyler Shough has found his name in circles with Josh Allen a couple of times this offseason through prospects and players who have played against Allen, and New Orleans Saints’ new pickup David Edwards took it one step further. He turned that connection into drawing actual parallels between Shough and Allen, as well as Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.
Edwards' resume is there, so when he compares Shough to players like Stafford and Allen it's best to listen. He has first hand experience playing with these players, so he knows about great quarterback play and the impact it could have on a team. He won a Super Bowl with the Rams and started Josh Allen's entire MVP season.
Are Super Bowls and MVPs on the way? Saints fans certainly hope so. However, no need to jump to hyperboles. Edwards laid out exactly what he meant. "I think (Shough) has all the tools to be a really successful top guy in this league." Forget who Shough is similar to or not for a second. Shough reaching that upper echelon is a dream scenario for the Saints
This has to be Tyler Shough's favorite comparison yet
Hearing comparisons to Stafford and Allen had to be music to Shough’s ears. Those are two people he heavily studied en route to the league. To hear comparisons to those two players feels like confirmation of Shough moving correctly on two fronts. One of which being getting compared to people you look up to signifies success in your studies.
Shough made it clear that he studied a lot of Matthew Stafford tape growing up. When it came to Allen, Shough couldn't study him growing up. He does acknowledge the similarities. He said, "I feel like I have a little bit of him in me when it comes to being a physical force at the line of scrimmage when it comes to ripping the ball down the field," leading up to the NFL Draft last year.
Secondly, these comparisons speaks to the impact Shough made as a rookie. Stafford has always been an extremely talented player who didn't see the success until he got to Los Angeles, so this makes sense. From an arm talent perspective, Stafford has been one of the best in the league for a while.
Edwards told media that Shough has "a unique ability to use his feet, his arm and his mind to beat people," like Edwards' previous quarterbacks. He also compares the similar mentalities. That's harder to see from the outside looking in, but they each had notable adversity they had to fight through in their career. Shough may not have to see that, but knowing he has a comprable mentality says a lot.
