We’re going on 3 months of Cam Jordan being a free agent. Chase Young and Jordan each reached double digit sacks last year, but Young didn’t mention that one time when detailing why he wants the New Orleans Saints to bring back his running mate.Â
Instead, Young focused on the leadership intangibles of Jordan's presence. He called the Saints legend a future Hall of Famer, a big brother to him, someone who has been massive for the Saints over the last 15 years and a leader. That latter part may be the most important when factoring in the departure of Demario Davis.
Young wrapped up with a clear message, "If it was me, I would love to get OG back in the building." This isn’t the first time Young has made the plea for the Saints to bring back Jordan. Young knows, like Saints fans, the importance of Jordan being on the team this year. There’s one theory that could explain why we haven’t seen more movement on this front.Â
There’s one explanation for Cam Jordan still being a free agent Saints fans might like
You kind of hope at this point the Saints are just doing Jordan a solid by allowing him to miss out on offseason activities without penalty. This is a move that isn’t uncommon among older free agent, and it would especially make sense for Jordan.Â
Jordan is heading into Year 15. He could use some extra time to let his body rest. Also, he, if signing with the Saints, already knows the system. If Jordan was going to another team, maybe that would be a bigger concern. At the same time, he’s an intelligent player who has also played in multiple systems in his career. He would likely pick up a new playbook pretty quickly.Â
Jordan doesn’t necessarily need to go through OTAs and minicamps. There’s a chemistry aspect to being around the team during the offseason, but there’s not much of a difference between the defense this year and last year. Even Kaden Elliss is a former Saint Jordan is familiar. Other than rookie Christen Miller, Jordan has played with and been around every expected starter.Â
We all sit here like Young, waiting for a decision. Maybe patience is the answer. If the Saints and Jordan are taking this approach, we may not see an agreement reached until right before training camp. Until Jordan signs with someone else, however, the Saints will feel like the favorite.Â
