Chase Young has had to face some talented right tackles through the first four games of the season, yet the New Orleans Saints edge defender has found great success to start the season. He'll be looking to restart his streak of games with a sack in Week 4, and he has to be licking his lips with the Minnesota Vikings ruling Christian Darrisaw out for the game.
Ryan Van Demark stepped in for Darrisaw in Week 4, after he left with a concussion, and gave up three hurries on 22 pass blocking snaps. As a comparison, Darrisaw has given up five pressures all year, though three of them were sacks. If Van Demark continues at his pace from last week, Young will have a field day against him.
The Vikings are already without left guard Donovan Jackson for the rest of the season, so the whole left side of their offensive line is banged up. It also means the Vikings don't have that trusted veteran who can help out the backup tackle. That's another advantage for Young.
Chase Young has been through the gauntlet this year
There's no guarantee Young will have a great game just because there's a backup in. He wasn't able to get a sack or quarterback hit last week, despite Falcons starting tackle Jake Matthews missing most of the game. However, it does increase the chances.
Young's level of success against the level of competition suggests he should be able to exploit the backup tackle. Young opened the season Penei Sewell and had some quick wins the stud tackle, even though Goff's quick releases limited the actual pressure numbers. The day looks a lot better if Young was credited for that strip sack, as well. Just saying.
Young followed it up with facing Ronnie Stanley, and that was his best game this season. He had 7 pressures and racked up 1.5 sacks Lamar Jackson in critical moments.
Getting to face the backup after those types of competition should help Young find success. He'd at least had a quarterback hit in the first three games, and had 3.5 sacks in Weeks 2 and 3, but Young was kept off the board in both categories last week. He'll be looking for a bounce back performance, and it'll be vital to the team's success.
The Saints can't let Kyler Murray start playing backyard football, and they can't give him all the time in the world to find Justin Jefferson. Young has been the only consistent pass rusher on the team, so that responsibility falls on him. He'll need to win his matchup against Van Demark and leave his mark on the game.
