The New Orleans Saints’ defensive line is headlined by Chase Young and Cameron Jordan, which is making Carl Granderson fly under the radar. The former undrafted free agent’s career has been plagued by inconsistency, but instances of superstardom are clear. Him becoming dependable is pivotal to their defensive success not only for 2026, but for their foreseeable future.
Granderson played a key role on the Saints’ defensive line in 2025 and racked up six sacks. On the surface, this number is perfectly fine; however, his untapped potential is evident with more research. He had a blazing start to the season with an impressive 4.5 sacks in his first four weeks. Then, Granderson went on a cold streak and didn’t grab another until the Saints’ season finale, where he had an additional 1.5.
Granderson has always had flashes of brilliance, but they don’t come often enough. The Saints don’t need him to be a 15+ sack artist, but reaching nine or 10 would be a massive boost to a defensive line filled with questions.
Carl Granderson must establish himself as the future complement to Chase Young.
Chase Young is a budding superstar for the Saints’ defense, but they are lacking a long-term partner for him. For now, Cameron Jordan has that role; however, the 37-year-old won’t be a major contributor for much longer. As a result, Granderson stepping up and claiming that spot would save the Saints from future hassle.
As aforementioned, Granderson has the ability, and the coaching staff is clearly behind him; he just needs to show it consistently. He won’t ever be the focal point of the Saints’ pass rush, which will give him one-on-one looks that he must dominate. These instances will be the difference between getting off the field and the offense earning another series.
The Saints’ future plan at defensive end is still murky, but Carl Granderson has a chance to change that this season. He can solidify his status as the future partner to Chase Young and form a dynamic tandem for Brandon Staley.
