Cameron Jordan has always embodied New Orleans Saints fans, mostly through love for the city and trash talking the Atlanta Falcons. He is once again on the side of the fans by advocating for the return of Jameis Winston.
Kellen Moore has previously stated the New Orleans Saints don’t need to add a veteran signal caller to their stable of inexperienced quarterbacks. The notion flies in the face of conventional wisdom so much, however, that it’s difficult to for some to believe that won’t change.
Even Jordan is a part of that group. He recently told Kay Adams, “I'm going to recruit a veteran quarterback properly when the time is right." It’s hard to blame Jordan for feeling this way. The Saints have a combined three seasons of NFL experience between the four quarterbacks on the roster. A veteran doesn't have to come in and start. He can simply be a veteran presence in a young room.
After tossing around a couple of names, such as Kirk Cousins and Joe Flacco, Jordan eventually landed on Winston. Winston is currently in New York playing the same role he'd be playing in New Orleans. Jordan commented on the Giants quarterback situation. "There’s Russell (Wilson) over there. They have Jaxson Dart. My guy, Jameis, come on down."
Jameis Winston's first tenure with the Saints
If Winston lands in the Big Easy, it would be a welcomed reunion for the quarterback and the fans. Winston's tenure in New Orleans was four years and mostly featured him as a backup, but he quickly became a fan favorite. He began his first year as a starter 5-2 before suffering a season ending injury.
Winston suffered another injury early in the following year. He was clearly hampered and took some time off. When he returned, Winston never regained his starting spot from Andy Dalton. Fans rallied around Winston in belief he was the best quarterback on the team.
Winston never got his job back, but he cemented himself by being the face of defying Dennis Allen and getting Jamaal Williams his lone touchdown of the season. That last second touchdown also ran up the score against the Atlanta Falcons.
Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler would continue to compete for the starting role. At this point, Winston isn't being brought in to start. He would simply be a mentor to the young starter.
