In the NFL, rookies tend to spend their first offseason trying to avoid getting lost. Instead, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Bryce Lance has spent his trying to get open, and it seems to have worked so far.
Per ESPN's Kat Terrell, the fourth-round pick is the Saints' biggest surprise heading into training camp. "He got his time to shine during minicamp, with Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson limited and a number of other wideouts hurt. Lance made it count during the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods, working with both the first- and second-team quarterbacks."
With a crowded wide receiver room, it was an encouraging debut. However, if you ask Lance, he knows that his performance so far isn't a port of call. For the record-setting receiver, it was only a first step.
Saints WR Bryce Lance knows that the real work is only just getting started
His first-ever minicamp might be over, but New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Bryce Lance still has a lot of work to do. However pessimistic that might seem, the 2026 fourth-round pick is perfectly fine with it.
Following the end of his first-ever minicamp, Lance met with the media. Deliberate in his self-assessment, he made it clear that he knew he was only just getting started. "I think I’ve set a starting point, but like I said there’s a lot of things to get better at. I’m super appreciative of the coaches for working with me and allowing me that space to grow," the receiver said. "I’m just super excited at getting better, because, like I said, this is just a starting point. This is the worst that I’ll ever be.”
It's critical that Lance have this kind of thinking, because as a day-three pick nothing is really guaranteed for him. However, as a fourth-round pick, he's all but likely to get a final roster spot barring anything drastic.
His chances are even slimmer than normal too, because there are an insane number of wideouts on the New Orleans roster right now. There's just no way they'll carry the 14 they have. Not the best news for the rookie, but again, it sounds like he knows that already.
