Alvin Kamara’s ongoing contract issues have been a major storyline throughout the New Orleans Saints offseason, with many people speculating about his future on the team and a potential pay cut. The veteran made it clear that isn’t concerning himself with that, and instead is focusing on the season.

“I haven’t had any conversations in regards to that, so I don’t know,” Kamara said. “I think there’s a time and place for everything. If that conversation comes up, I’ll have an answer for you.”

It’s noteworthy that Kamara didn’t state any details. The veteran hasn’t had conversations about a pay cut with the front office and isn’t concerned with the pending outcome. His eyes are set on this upcoming campaign and helping the Saints’ offense in any way he can.

A pay cut would save money, but it isn’t a necessary move

Kamara, entering his 10th year in the NFL, is coming off a season with 471 rushing yards and one touchdown. He missed the final six weeks of 2025 with various knee and ankle injuries. Because of the decrease in durability and explosiveness, the Saints brought in Travis Etienne Jr. to be their lead back. As a result, it’s tough to warrant paying Kamara lead-back money when he will have a smaller, yet still impactful, role in the offense.

Contrary to prior seasons, the Saints aren’t in salary cap trouble. They currently have over $8 million in space, according to Over the Cap. They could still alter Kamara’s $10.4 million cap hit, which would give them more flexibility, but they don’t need to.

Now, will the Saints try to work out a deal? Yes. There’s no reason they shouldn’t try and save money. They will undoubtedly have talks with Kamara and his representation before the season. However, it’s not a major deal and shouldn’t concern the national media. Both sides want to keep Kamara in New Orleans; they will work something out.
