The question of who will be behind Travis Etienne Jr. and Alvin Kamara on the New Orleans Saints depth chart is a big question for the Saints. It's hard to truly have a conversation about the battle when Kendre Miller and Devin Neal are on the shelf with injuries, however. That's why the Saints' preseason opener is a perfect opportunity for Audric Estime to snatch the position.
Miller came back from an ACL injury suffered last year for the beginning of camp, and his presence was a welcomed sight. Unfortunately, it didn't last long, as he suffered a back injury shortly into camp. This continues an unlucky trend for Miller, and it could cost him not only his role but a spot on the roster.
Neal was healthy his entire time at Kansas, but that hasn't carried over the pros for him. He's currently dealing with hamstring injury that's had him working off to the side at practice. Both running backs will attempt to play in the debut, and they both need to.
Audric Estime could shut down the Saints' RB3 conversation.
If it went purely on talent, Miller would be the Saints third running back. It's why he was considered the favorite for the role, even with his injury history. It's just obvious when you see him play.
Problem is Miller isn't seen playing enough, and this latest injury opens the door wide for anyone to run through. Seeing that both Miller and Neal could miss this game, it will be Estime attempting to run through that door on Saturday.
The gap between Estime and Neal honestly should have been viewed closer than many did, me included. Estime closed the season strong, and gave the Saints their first 30 yard run by a running back in years and had one of two 90+ yard rushing performances last season.
Estime is a physical back, but there's some nimbleness to his game. It wouldn't be surprising to see him put together a strong showing versus Jacksonville. The longer Miller and Neal don't play or practice, the more chance Estime has to stake his claim to the third role.
