Alvin Kamara suffered a sprained MCL that will keep him out for at least a month and will keep him out of the New Orleans Saints' season opener. It isn't a long term injury, but it's the continuation of a trend you don't want to see for a player in Kamara's position. The trend could be a sign of this being Kamara's final season.

It may seem like a large step for an injury that' could keep Kamara out for just two games. However, the amount of time missed is a product of when the injury was suffered, not severity of the injury. If this happened during the season, it could have cost him four to six games.

A sprained MCL kept Kamara out for four weeks in 2021 and six weeks just last season. It's not just the history of MCL injuries that is concerning. Injuries, in general, have began to stack up for the running back.

Alvin Kamara could start considering retirement

Kamara has missed at least three games in each of the last three seasons and 4 of the last 5 years (the mass majority of that time in 2023 was due to suspension.) It's become a repeated trend, and that should concern Kamara as much as it should concern fans. The Saints didn't go get Travis Etienne for no reason.

Kamara turned 30 years old last year, and that's the magic number where everyone begins to count running backs out. He's a year past that and has multiple injuries on his resume. It isn't a great combination for the running back.

All of the recent injuries have been lower body injuries. He's had groin and ankle injuries to go along with the ligament sprains. For a player who's special traits are balance and elusiveness, these ailments take a significant toll.

Kamara's Saints future is another reason to consider retirement. He has previously stated that he doesn't want to play anywhere other than New Orleans. The way negotiations were handled this offseason creates doubt that Kamara would play for the Saints in 2027, health aside.

The uncertainty of Kamara's future is an external factor that could play into the decision. His health is an internal factor that should play into his decision. They've been constant, and at a certain point, one has to wonder how many times Kamara can or would even want to go through this process.
