Alvin Kamara and Cam Jordan have been long term fixtures with the New Orleans Saints. Both of their futures hang in the balance, under much different circumstances, and both players could find some finality based on how the Saints approach the NFL Draft.

The Saints are coming off their best draft since 2017. It has built the foundation for the Kellen Moore era in just a year. The Saints are looking to capitalize off the momentum and respond with another strong class. Moving towards the future may come with sacrificing the past though.

Kamara and Jordan aren’t alone in that. There’s two other veterans whose status with the Saints could be change depending on the results of the draft.

Saints could turn Alvin Kamara and Cesar Ruiz into NFL Draft capitol on draft night

Saints' feelings about Alvin Kamara will be crystal clear by Sunday

This is simple. If the Saints draft a running back in the first five rounds, Kamara will not be a Saint in 2025. Travis Etienne was brought in to be the Saints new lead running back. The 1-2 punch of Etienne and Kamara could be dangerous in 2026. Grabbing Jadarian Price, for example, would give a sign of a brand new direction.

The selection puts Kamara in position to be the third running back in the rotation. That's just unjustifiable. Kamara is a respected running back and will garner a larger role on another team if he wants to continue playing. It won't be much, but the Saints will get something back.

Cesar Ruiz may find another reason for motivation

Cesar Ruiz may be impassioned to have the best season of his career, and the Saints may only add more fuel to the internal fire. The second round is likely the earliest point that guard is on the table. If the Saints pick one that early, it likely means the end of the road for Ruiz in New Orleans.

Ruiz could net a mid round pick in return, so if the Saints draft a guard they view as a Day 1 starter, it would make sense to get an immediate return for their former starter. Drafting a guard in the middle of the draft likely results in retaining Ruiz and give the rookie a year to sit or have a training camp battle for the starting role.

Ja'Lynn Polk could dip further down the WR room pecking order

Polk is much different than the rest of the players on the list. He’s not a part of the past the Saints could move on from. The draft could simply change where he falls on the pecking order. The Saints drafting Jordyn Tyson gives the Saints a clear top two options. Devaughn Vele has shown himself deserving of the next spot. That makes Polk fourth in line. That’s a great situation for NFL teams, but Moore showed an inability to use that many healthy receivers in that time.

Cam Jordan may simply choose to not return

This one isn't about the Saints. They could draft Arvelle Reese and should still bring Cam Jordan back. They need depth in the room. Grabbing a top prospect in the draft still leaves room for another pass rusher in the rotation.

The ball would be in Jordan's court. He wants to produce similarly to what he did last season. While Jordan accomplished that as the third pass rusher is great, but double digit sacks aren't likely to be replicated if that is once again the case.
