While it's still early, the New Orleans Saints appear to have something in quarterback Tyler Shough. The 2025 second-round pick out of Louisville helped turn the Saints into a promising football team in the back half of last season and that's enough reason for Spencer Rattler to potentially be on the trade block.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter confirmed that Rattler is indeed someone that could be traded before, during, or after draft weekend.
"Those who could gain interest include Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., Titans quarterback Will Levis, Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler, Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II, Giants edge Kayvon Thibodeaux, Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman and 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, among others."
Adam Schefter says Spencer Rattler could be potential trade candidate
This isn't a surprise to Saints fans. As soon as Shough was the unquestioned starter, Rattler became expendable. Sure, he's an okay backup to have but if a team is willing to give up draft picks to land him, New Orleans should definitely listen to and consider those offers.
Rattler was the Saints' fifth-round pick in 2024 and had quite the fall from grace. Once thought to be the surefire number one pick when he was in college at Oklahoma, things fell apart quickly for Rattler. He ended up transferring to South Carolina and wasn't chosen until the fifth round in 2024 by New Orleans, which was thought to be a steal of a pick at the time.
While Rattler never looked awful, the Saints didn't win any games with him under center as a rookie and won just two games as the starter last year. As soon as Shough took over, the offense looked significantly better.
If the Saints do trade Rattler and can get picks for him (assuming he's traded before or during the draft), good for them. If they opt to keep him or don't get a good enough offer for him, that works too. They'd need to find a decent backup to have behind Shough but that's a bridge to cross if it comes to that.
It's a good spot for the Saints to be in because they either add a pick or they get to keep a quarterback they feel comfortable putting into games should Shough have to miss time. Win-win.
