Harold Landry signed a three year contract with the New England Patriots last offseason, rejoining his former head coach Mike Vrabel. There's been some chatter that he may hit the open market once again. If it happens, the New Orleans Saints should at least inquire about how much Landry is asking for.

Despite having a productive season, Boston Globe's Christian Price thinks Landry could be a cap casualty. Price points to a knee injury that plagued Landry but also the Patriots' need to pay K'Lavon Chaisson. If those two can't work out a deal, the Saints may have a new prime target in free agency. As for Landry, Price admits letting him go would be a hard decision for Vrabel.

Harold Landry could be worth a flyer for Saints in free agency

The truth is Chase Young opens up the type of player you could get at that position. It used to be about finding your top edge rusher, but Young clearly stepped into that role. He had the best year of his career in a season that started with Young on the shelf for the first five games. Young's emergence places focus on complimentary pieces instead of stars.

Landry was an interesting prospect for the Saints last year. This was pre-Young explosion. He fits well within this scheme from a body type and experience perspective. Landry had 8.5 sacks last season while managing a lingering knee injury. Solid numbers but it's still not likely going to make him command big money on the market if New England cuts him.

The Saints already have Cam Jordan as a free agent at the position. It's safe to assume he will be a priority to retain. That doesn't remove Landry from the table. Carl Granderson has left much to be desired in the consistency field. A training camp battle between Landry and Granderson could be fascinating.

It doesn't stop you from drafting an edge rusher either. If the Saints draft an edge rusher, you can still have Landry in a rotational role. It would likely maximize the defense. You're going to go three to four players deep on the rotation. If that rotation is Young, an impact rookie, Jordan and Landry, you're looking at a scary pass rush. We may just be getting greedy at this point.

The caveat is always if the money is right. Reading the aforementioned rotation and it would clearly be a luxury. A luxury the Saints may not want to try to afford. It's hard to imagine giving Landry a contract in the double digit millions, even if it's just for a season. Jordan departing could make the Saints more willing to do that. However, this situation is operating
