The rumor mill part of the offseason is in full swing right now, with one being louder than the others: AJ Brown has played his last snap with the Philadelphia Eagle. The connection to Kellen Moore makes the fit with the New Orleans Saints natural, but that doesn't make it smart.
It makes some sense, as Brown won a Super Bowl as recently as last year and is also a multi-time Pro Bowler and all-Pro. However, he is one receiver that the Saints should avoid at all costs for multiple reasons, like his character concerns and his demand to have a majority of the targets. Just last weekend, Brown was seen in a heated argument with his head coach, Nick Sirianni.
As the Saints are a team that is currently rebuilding and Kellen Moore is working hard to build a good locker room culture, New Orleans just doesn't seem like the city for Brown. There's also the fact that there's already a WR1 in town. Chris Olave's presence isn't likely to help Brown's desire for more targets, so the same drama that's happening in Philly right now is probable to happen again in New Orleans.
Even if the Saints wanted A.J. Brown, it likely wouldn't be possible
The Eagles this offseason are likely to find it difficult to move on from A.J. Brown, and not because they'll have a sudden change of heart. Their biggest obstacle in getting rid of the wide receiver is one of their own making: his contract.
If Brown were to be traded at any point before June 1, it would cause a $43.5 million dead cap hit for Philadelphia in 2026, and per Spotrac, it would be the fourth-largest dead cap hit in the history of the National Football League.
Currently, Brown has around four years left on his contract, with about $113 million left to be paid. So, to put it bluntly, his contract would have to drastically change if he were traded. Whether he likes it or not, Brown might still be in Philadelphia next season.
