A.I. suggests a short-sighted approach to the Saints quarterback situation in 2025
With 2025 near, people are starting to use artificial intelligence, or A.I., for everything. Sometimes, it’s fun to give A.I. different prompts just to see what it comes up with. Draft Kings recently did that, asking A.I to fix every quarterback-needy team in the NFL.
The New Orleans Saints, who are in the middle of another underwhelming season, were one of the teams A.I. gave a suggestion to. The Saints are currently in their second season with Derek Carr as QB1, and while he is under contract after this season, many people believe it’s time for New Orleans to move on.
Apparently, artificial intelligence does as well. According to Draft Kings, A.I. believes the best path forward for New Orleans next season is signing Justin Fields to start and designing a run-first offense around Alvin Kamara, Taysom Hill, and the mobile Justin Fields.
That suggestion is exactly why you can’t trust artificial intelligence to do everything, because that isn’t a good approach for the long-term success of New Orleans.
Artificial intelligence tells Saints to sign Justin Fields in 2025
In reality, this would likely be a productive offense. Fields, Kamara, and Hill are three elite runners behind a solid offensive line, and Fields can also make throws to the talented weapons New Orleans has on the perimeter. The problem, though, is that it’s a short-sighted approach.
Since Drew Brees retired, the Saints have been stuck in a veteran quarterback loop, and they haven’t had much success with any of them. That’d likely be the same script for a Justin Fields tenure. New Orleans needs to commit to finding a young quarterback it can develop into its franchise QB.
That could possibly be Justin Fields, who is younger (25) than Brees when he came to New Orleans, but the idea of him leading a run-first offense isn’t sustainable. Taysom Hill is 35 years old with one additional season on his contract and he just tore his ACL. Alvin Kamara will turn 30 in the offseason, and he only has two years left on his deal. Even if this offense was elite, it wouldn’t be around for long.
The Saints don’t really need to pivot to someone that could be considered a bridge quarterback. They either need to turn to one of the young quarterbacks currently on the roster, trade up and select a quarterback early in the draft, or just stick with Derek Carr.
