A favorable market gives the Saints leverage to trade Spencer Rattler

Spencer Rattler could be a good backup or an even better trade piece

Spencer Rattler has 16 games under his belt, 14 of them as a starter. Unless Tyler Shough goes down due to injury, Rattler's number of starts is unlikely to go up with the New Orleans Saints. Chris Olave told the media earlier this month he thinks Rattler could still be a starter elsewhere. The market may actually give Rattler a chance.

Trading Rattler sounds really good on paper, but the Saints need to really think about the decision. He's not going to be a starter, but Rattler is a solid backup quarterback, not to mention the only quarterback other than Shough on the roster. The Saints have seen the value of a backup in recent years, so it would make sense if they wanted to hold on to him for that reason.

If the Saints did decide they wanted to trade him, this would be a pretty good year to do it. There's more than a few destinations who could want his services. The options may push the Saints into making the deal and finding a new backup quarterback.

A Spencer Rattler trade may be as simple as supply and demand

This won't be a talent rich offseason for quarterbacks, but it will be a quarterback needy offseason. Rattler won't command a premium, but the mixture of those two components could drive the price up slightly.

Malik Willis will be the top quarterback on the market this free agency. He performed well in Jordan Love's absence and should be relatively inexpensive. He also won't require a long term investment, making Willis a perfect trial quarterback that could be your future or your bridge.

Mac Jones looked really good during his time starting in San Francisco, and the 49ers have him under contract for another year. Jones could be a hot trade commodity, but that requires the 49ers to play ball. Jones and Willis are the only clear cut players above Rattler.

Meanwhile, the draft features Fernando Mendoza and a fall off after that. It wouldn't be shocking if he's the only first round quarterback. Ty Simpson may sneak in late. You're looking at one free agent, one trade commodity, one slam dunk first overall pick and one potential first rounder. Even assuming the 49ers deal Jones, there's more than four teams that could need quarterbacks. That's where Rattler comes into play.

Let's assume the Raiders draft Mendoza. The Jets and Steelers need a quarterback, assuming Aaron Rodgers finally calls it quits. The future of Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa and Shedeur Sanders/ Deshaun Watson in Arizona, Miami and Cleveland rests in the hands of a coach that has yet to be decided. J.J. McCarthy had disappointing moments in Minnesota, but what they do remains a coin flip. Those teams could all be looking for a new starter or adding competition to a starting battle.
