The New Orleans Saints are 88 days away from the Arizona Cardinals making the trip to the Caesars Superdome for a Week 1 showdown. To continue our countdown to kickoff, we take a look back at the biggest play from the Saints first trip to the NFC Championship Game, Reggie Bush's 88 yard touchdown catch.
Though the Saints ended up falling in that game, there probably isn't a more memorable play from that game than Bush catching a pass from Drew Brees and taking it the length of the football field. The Saints drew up a rub play that got Brees wide open on a wheel route.
Bush caught the ball at the 26-yard line with one defender in front of him. Bush made that defender miss and it was nothing but open field from there. The running back created enough space that he was able to look back and point at linebacker Brian Urlacher. Bush was fined for that decision after the game, but he wasn't flagged during the game.
It was the highlight of the NFC Championship Game and the last time the Saints scored during the game. It brought the Saints within 2 points, but Chicago closed the game on a 23-0 stretch to claim victory.
Reggie Bush the perfect player to pull off the play
2006 was a year of rebirth for the Saints. The team returned to New Orleans, the coach-quarterback duo of Sean Payton-Drew Brees debuted that year and the Saints pulled in a franchise altering draft class. Bush was the face of that class as the first round pick. He was also coming off one of the most iconic college careers of the generation.
If there was going to be a highlight from that game, a throw from Drew Brees to Reggie Bush was the perfect pair to do it. This was the best season in Saints history, at that point. Brees and Bush were two of the biggest individual reasons for excitement.
Although Bush didn't go on to be the best player from that draft class, he provided his share of iconic moments with the Saints. His 88-yard touchdown reception in the biggest game the Saints had played is his first appearance on the list, but it may not be his last.
