With 82 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off the 2025 season against the Arizona Cardinals, we continue our countdown to kickoff with tight end Treyton Welch is the Saints player of the day.

Welch is entering his second year in the NFL and also his second year with the Saints. He went undrafted in 2024 but would eventually sign with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent. The tight end spent the preseason with Cleveland before being waived and signed to the Saints.

Welch didn't see the field in 2024. He was a member of the practice squad, but the Saints never called him up for game action. After the season, New Orleans signed Welch to a reserve/futures deal to keep him around a little longer.

Treyton Welch's top year in college came in 2022

Prior to entering the league, Welch attended the University of Wyoming from 2019-2023, playing in 50 games for the Cowboys in his four years. He actually shared the field with fellow Saint Xavien Valladay in college. Welch gathered 77 receptions for 874 receiving yards and nine touchdowns during his time in Laramie.

Welch's best season came in 2022. His five receiving touchdowns made him the only tight end in the Mountain West's top-10 receiving touchdown leaders. Welch matched his yardage in the following seasons, but five touchdowns remained his career high.

Chances are slim Welch makes the final roster

However, with veterans like Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson in the TE room, as well as Michael Jacobson, Maliki Motavo, and Jack Stoll vying for the final spot on the roster, Welch will struggle to make the final roster when roster cuts take place in August. And with him yet to make a splash, it's doubtful that he'll manage to do so.

The Saints will have the opportunity to get a more in-depth look once training camp begins in August. That will most likely be his last chance to make the final roster. Welch doesn't seem to be one of the top players in the battle. Even with Taysom Hill injured and out at the top of the year, the practice squad is the most likely destination for Welch.
