The New Orleans Saints are set to begin training camp on July 29 and will get their first look at some key players/positions. But what exactly must they show? Below are the three things that the Saints need to show fans/coaches in order to have a successful training camp.

It’s important to note that training camp isn’t the sole deciding factor in position battles and won’t single-handedly determine how a group performs. However, it’s an excellent indicator of what’s to come and can drastically change the outlook. So, value these performances, but realize that things can quickly change.

With that in mind, it’s time to dive into three things that the Saints must show in training camp.

The Saints' cornerbacks must battle.

The cornerback room must compete with the wide receivers.

The Saints haven’t been shy about adding talent to the receiver room this offseason. As a result, it’s arguably the best position group on the roster; the same can’t be said about cornerback. Kool-Aid McKinstry is extremely talented, albeit inconsistent, and the rest of the group is unproven. It’s vital that they compete against the receivers and don’t allow them to dominate in one-on-one situations. If they hold their own, it’s an amazing sign for Brandon Staley’s defense.

The Saints must have a reliable option at the STAR position.

Alontae Taylor’s departure created a need at the STAR role for Staley’s defense. A select few players can play this position as they are tasked with covering slot receivers/tight ends, triggering downhill to defend the run, and blitzing the quarterback. Jonas Sanker is the frontrunner for the spot, but other players will undoubtedly be tested. It doesn't matter who wins the battle; the only important thing is that they are a reliable contributor.

A running back needs to step up behind Travis Etienne and Alvin Kamara.

The Saints’ top two running backs are set in stone: Travis Etienne and Alvin Kamara. However, the depth chart gets murky after that. Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estime are all vying for that solidified roster spot and third role. Right now, it’s anyone's game. It’s hard to tell how a running back does without contact, but the fans and coaches will still get an amazing look at crucial drills and team reps that will decide this.
