Former New Orleans Saints slot cornerback Alontae Taylor departed for the Tennessee Titans in free agency. This creates a massive need at the position that the Saints must address either during free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft.Â
Taylor’s contract had been rumored to exceed $17 million per year and ultimately landed on a $20 million average. He’s an amazing player, but the Saints were wise to pass on that price tag. Instead, they can find a suitable replacement for far cheaper. Nobody will reach his level on day-one, and they shouldn’t be expected to, but these options below will help fill the role and could develop into that.
With that said, here are three potential replacements for Taylor in free agency and the NFL Draft.
Veteran Mike Hilton would be a perfect short-term fix for the Saints
Mike Hilton
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Mike Hilton had a rocky 2025 campaign filled with injuries, but is still a suitable replacement for Taylor. The nine year veteran has over 4,700 career snaps in the slot and has seen everything an offense has to offer. He’s not a long-term option, rather being a bridge player, but would fill in until the Saints find an answer. Additionally, he would be insanely cheap and wouldn’t require a heavy investment. It would likely be a one-year deal that wouldn’t have a significant impact on the cap, which is exactly what the Saints should be looking for.
Keionte Scott
My player comp for Miami cornerback Keionte Scott is Alontae Taylor. The versatile slot defender is impactful on every down and makes his presence known. He fires downhill against the run and is capable of a game changing play while in pass coverage. He would perfectly fill in Taylor’s role and could be the future for the position. Scott would require a day two pick in April, but could be well worth it.
Caleb Downs
Although Caleb Downs is listed as as safety, he frequently lines up in the slot. The versatile defender is the whole package and combines elite IQ with stellar instincts and athleticism. He's impressive in coverage and can shutdown an opposing receiver or tight end. Downs would be a spectacular selection at pick eight and would be a high-quality replacement for Taylor.
