They say history repeats itself, and the New Orleans Saints are dangerously close to repeating the 2024 season, which could be bad news for Kellen Moore’s future as head coach. The team had a really impressive start to the season in the first two games, we began to crown them as one of the best teams in the league then they completely collapsed. Guess we haven’t learned our lesson.
The Saints started 1-1 this year instead of 2-0, but the tone was similar. It wasn’t quite “the Saints could be one of the best teams in the league,” but there was a sentiment that they could be real contenders. An absolute collapse followed yet again, and fans are left wondering what happened to the team we saw at the beginning of the season.
For the second time in three years, it feels like we overhyped the Saints based on 2 games. The last 2 games have been terrible, and it’s created questions of who this team is really. This game against the Vikings is an opportunity to answer the question and regain momentum.
Kellen Moore is in a different situation than Dennis Allen but how different?
The 2024 season saw the end of the Dennis Allen era. It doesn't feel like Moore is at that point, but it's also beginning to feel like it's not that far.
The Saints fired Allen in the middle of the year, and that's what feels like the big difference between him and Moore. Moore getting fired in the middle of the season doesn't feel like a realistic outcome.
A few weeks ago, however, Moore losing his job at all felt inconceivable. After the way the Saints lost to the Falcons, Moore's part in the loss and his post game press conference, it feels like the tides are beginning to turn on Moore in the fan base and media.
There was a lot of faith for what the Saints were building this offseason, and that faith created expectations. The Saints are in a rebuild, yes, but things such as slow starts and lack of being prepared don't have to be accepted simply because the Saints are rebuilding.
Allen wore out his welcome in that final season, and it feels like Moore is beginning to do the same. Allen was in his third year as head coach, in his second stint as a head coach and had years of history with the Saints before that. Most importantly, there was a stretch of time where the team was bad but he could hang his hat on the defensive performance.
Moore doesn't have that history, and so far he hasn't been able to hang his hat on the offense being consistent. The offense has shown spurts of what they could be, and as impressive as it is, they need more consistency. They also need to do it early in games more often.
If things head in this direction, 2026 will feel exactly like 2024 did. Moore could lose his job after the season or at the least be on a blistering hot seat going into 2027. The Saints will need to stop the spiral soon to save their season, and Moore needs it to potentially save his job.
