Saints 2022 Training Camp: 3 takeaways from Day 7
The New Orleans Saints had their seventh practice of training camp. What takeaways were to be had from Day 7 of practice?
The New Orleans Saints are now a week into training camp and the one big storyline that fans had been following along with was — When will Tyrann Mathieu report? The Honey Badger had missed the first week of camp due to personal reasons.
Well, let’s start with Mathieu for the first takeaway of Day 7.
Honey Badger is back!
That’s right — Tyrann Mathieu rejoined the team on Wednesday for his first training camp practice as a member of the Saints.
While Mathieu’s return is obviously exciting, it wasn’t surprising to see him not doing actual work with the team during his first practice back. This isn’t something to be concerned about; Mathieu is a seasoned vet and should hopefully be good to go when the regular season gets underway. It’s good to have him back though!
Penning Problems
Trevor Penning’s reputation has been pretty spot on and he’s displayed that over the past three days while engaging in some scuffles with his teammates. On Monday it was with Payton Turner, on Tuesday it was with J.T. Gray, and on Wednesday, everything came to a head when Penning and Malcolm Roach got into it and found themselves kicked out of practice.
Katherine Terrell noted that she didn’t actually see the fight but explained the rest of what she saw. It ended up being a bench-clearing fight and Penning was then removed from practice. Head coach Dennis Allen wasn’t happy about the scuffle, noting “We don’t have time for that”.
While it’s certainly not a good look to get into fights three days in a row, hopefully getting kicked out of Wednesday’s practice will be a wake-up call for Penning. He can’t be doing this crap when the season gets underway.
Ceedy wants to get paid
One of the more notable players hitting free agency after the 2022 season is C.J. Gardner-Johnson. He’s someone the team should absolutely try and extend before the season gets underway because of the fire and tenacity he brings to the secondary.
Well, Ceedy has decided to limit his activity during practice recently because he wants a new contract. This isn’t surprising considering how solid of a player Gardner-Johnson has been for the Saints and hopefully, the two sides can come to an agreement before the season kicks off in September.
Seven days of practice are officially in the books!
