3. Penning and Hurst split starting reps

This summer’s biggest camp battle is at the left tackle spot, which was left vacant when Terron Armstead opted not to return for a 10th year in New Orleans. Armstead headed to Miami to join the Dolphins and that left the Saints without a surefire starting left tackle.

James Hurst is returning for a third season with the black and gold and provided the team with a veteran option at the position if they chose to go in that direction. New Orleans decided to spend one of their two first-round picks on Trevor Penning, a tackle out of Northern Iowa.

The addition of Penning in the first round probably puts him as the favorite to win the job but both guys took first-team reps during Thursday’s practice.

This isn’t surprising to see in camp. Once the preseason games get underway, we’ll start to see more of where Dennis Allen and the rest of the coaching staff’s heads are at when it comes to this left tackle battle.

If Penning really struggles, Hurst certainly has a chance to win the job.
