Saints’ Takeaway No. 2: No Pete Werner

Linebacker Pete Werner was nowhere to be found on Day 1, though reports out of Saints camp suggest it’s nothing to be worried about.

While the team was practicing drills, Werner was reportedly off to the side doing some solo work. He has no injury concerns that we know of, but he likely has his own reasons for not working out with the team.

Werner played backup to Demario Davis and Kwon Alexander last season, and with Alexander gone, Werner could earn a starting spot next to Davis if he plays his cards right.

The 2021 second-rounder saw double-digit specials teams snaps in every game from Week 9 to Week 18 of last season, yet Werner no doubt wants to make the leap to become a consistent starter in the defense.

He showed impressive athleticism and natural instincts as a rookie in 2021, but he needs to improve his pass coverage as he continues to gain experience and learn from one of the best at the position.

Until we hear anything more substantial of Werner in camp, there’s little to be concerned about. He’s on the right track to win a starting role in 2022.
