Starting Left Tackle

When Terron Armstead opted to leave for the Dolphins, the Saints were forced to start over at one of the most important positions in the sport. Armstead had struggled to stay healthy during the course of his nine-year career but there was no debating the impact he had at the position. When healthy, he was one of the best in the league at his position.

To replace Armstead, the Saints spent their second round one selection on Trevor Penning out of Northern Iowa. The UNI rookie will be competing with veteran James Hurst for the left tackle job in what should be an intense battle.

Penning probably has the edge considering he was the team’s first-round pick (or one of them anyway) but if he struggles in preseason action, the Saints likely won’t hesitate to slide Hurst in at left tackle instead. In the two years he’s spent with the team, Hurst has seen plenty of playing time and has always played well. He’s a nice option to have if Penning isn’t ready to go in Week 1.
