With Alvin Kamara likely facing a suspension to begin the 2022 season, the New Orleans Saints need help at running back. The Kansas City Chiefs have a slew of running backs that could help while Kamara is out.

When Alvin Kamara is healthy, he’s one of the best running backs in the league. Unfortunately, he might miss some time at the start of the season so the New Orleans Saints need to act wisely and find some help at the position.

Yes, they have Mark Ingram but he’s aging and won’t be able to do everything Kamara does. The team might give someone like UDFA Abram Smith a shot to prove himself but they’ll probably end up keeping Dwayne Washington as the No. 3 running back because of what he offers on special teams.

New Orleans should be closely monitoring what happens with the Chiefs‘ running back situation as training camp progresses. Kansas City has a plethora of talented running backs and won’t be able to keep them all for the 2022 season. That’s where the Saints should be paying close attention.

Saints need to look into trading for whichever Chiefs RB is on roster bubble

For those who don’t know much about the Chiefs’ running back situation, I’ll go into detail for you. The only true lock to make the team is former first-round pick and LSU hero Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Outside of CEH, the Chiefs have to figure out who makes the roster between Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Derrick Gore, Jerrion Ealy, and rookie seventh-round pick Isaih Pacheco.

Two seasons ago, Jones racked up 978 yards rushing and had eight total trips into the end zone. He’s probably going to make the KC roster but if he ends up being on the bubble, perhaps a trade could be worked out between the Saints and the Chiefs to bring Jones to the Big Easy.

The other options are intriguing too.

  • McKinnon was crushing it in the AFC Championship game but then for whatever reason, the Chiefs went away from running the ball before melting down against the Bengals.
  • Gore played at Louisiana-Monroe and had over 250 rushing yards in 11 games with KC last year.
  • Ealy racked up over 700 yards rushing in each of his three seasons at Ole Miss.
  • Pacheco had 647 yards rushing at Rutgers last year and averaged 3.9 yards per carry.

Jones is probably the only player the Saints would have to work out a trade for while the others could be signed for cheap after they’re let go by KC.

Maybe New Orleans feels comfortable enough with their running back options but if they decide to find another option, the Chiefs might have that option on their roster right now.
