Saints Roster: Realistic expectations for J.T. Gray in 2022
J.T. Gray is entering his fifth year on the New Orleans Saints roster. What should fans expect from the special teams standout?
The New Orleans Saints get the most out of their UDFAs and J.T. Gray is another example of that. After not hearing his name called in the 2018 NFL Draft, Gray linked up with the Saints and he’s remained in the Big Easy ever since.
Gray is listed as a defensive back but he’s seldom played on defense during his four years with the black and gold. He’s become exclusively a special teams guy and that’s what his role will be in 2022 and however long he’s a member of the Saints.
Last season saw Gray take the most defensive snaps in his career with 4% proving how little he’s on the field with the defense. In comparison, he was on the field for 83% of special teams snaps during the 2021 season.
Saints Roster: What should fans expect from J.T. Gray in 2022?
This is certainly one of the easier answers to these realistic expectation articles that I’ve been doing for over a month. We all know that Gray’s strengths lie in the special teams portion of the game and that’s going to continue in 2022.
The Saints value special teams and that’s why Gray’s been so appreciated with the team. This past year was his best season yet, as he made it to his first Pro Bowl and was also named to the All-Pro team for the first time in his career as well.
Gray is a talented player on special teams and New Orleans won’t be moving on from him as long as he continues to thrive in that role.
Special teams might not be the most thrilling aspect of a game but it’s where J.T. Gray shines. A realistic expectation for the former Mississippi State product is for him to continue leading the way on special teams as the captain.
