1. Erik McCoy

The player the Saints should look the most into extending before the season begins is Erik McCoy, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The team spent a second-round pick on the Texas A&M center in the 2019 NFL Draft and he’s become a solid option at the position.

McCoy had a 63.6 PFF grade last season and that was despite missing five starts due to injury. We saw how much worse the offensive line was without him and that’s reason No. 1 why the team needs to get him signed to an extension as soon as possible.

The former second-round pick is only going to be 25 this season and he won’t turn 26 until right before the 2023 regular season is set to begin. That’ll make him very popular in free agency next offseason and he’ll be hard for the Saints to keep in the Big Easy.

The franchise tag is certainly an option, yes, but hopefully New Orleans doesn’t let it come to that. They need to get him signed to an extension and he should be first in line.
