The Saints began their mandatory minicamp this week, and the position battles that we’ll likely see waged all the way through training camp began to take root.

So far this offseason, the New Orleans Saints have gone through the voluntary minicamp, the rookie minicamp, and five sets of OTAs (Organized Team Activities). Through those team gatherings, we had yet to see Alvin Kamara, Demario Davis, and a host of other veterans on the field.

Mind you, that was fine. Veteran presence was voluntary and most of these guys are fully aware of how to get prepared on their own for the intense season ahead.

That all changed this week, as the mandatory minicamp was the first and only that was required for all players under contract.

While rules still prevent full contact at the minicamp, we’ll get our first glimpse of how the new players compared to the returning ones – well, the returning ones who aren’t still recovering from injuries anyway.

The footwork, the hands, and the speed will all be on display. These four position battles are my favorites to keep an eye on as we move toward full training camp in July.
