Likeable Saints player No. 1: Tyrann Mathieu
Mathieu hasn’t even played a snap for the Saints, yet he’s already one of the most darling players on the team. The New Orleans native intimated at a potential homecoming with the Saints this offseason, and NOLA finally made it happen.
Back in May, Mathieu led all players with the top-selling NFL jersey in the league and we’d expect his jersey sales to keep on rising. The Honey Badger has put together impressive campaigns at Arizona and Kansas City and admittedly joins the Saints at the backend of his career — that doesn’t mean he won’t be treasured in NOLA, though.
Mathieu has recorded at least one interception in every single season in the league, notching an incredible 13 picks in his last three years with the Chiefs. This offseason, Kansas City booted him out in favor of younger talent, but their loss is the Saints’ gain.
After the departures of Marcus Williams and Malcolm Jenkins, Mathieu is primed to assume a starting safety role alongside Marcus Maye, Marshon Lattimore, and Ceedy Duce in the backfield, and almost all would agree he’s the better defensive pick-up compared to Daniel Sorensen.
Mathieu’s roots trace all the way back to his LSU days and has been linked to the Saints for some time now. He reportedly only had eyes for the Saints as a free agent this summer, and it’s safe to say he made a lot of fans’ dreams come true.
Seeing the Honey Badger find a home in New Orleans is arguably the sweetest outcome of the offseason, and his number will be proudly displayed all around the Superdome in 2022.
