SS Starter: Tyrann Mathieu

Reserves: Daniel Sorensen, Justin Evans, Smoke Monday

Tyrann Mathieu’s arrival to New Orleans saves what would have been a bleak group at strong safety. Mathieu previously spent three years with the Chiefs, appearing in two Super Bowls with Kansas City and being a big part in why the Chiefs won it all in the 2019 season. He’ll bring the veteran presence that the team needs after Williams and Jenkins departed.

Before Mathieu was signed, the Saints made a head-scratching move by inking another former Chiefs safety to a deal. Daniel Sorensen’s signing wasn’t a popular one, however, and if you watched him play for the Chiefs at all, you’d know why. He’s not good.

Justin Evans was signed this offseason and is an intriguing name to watch. He was a second-round pick by the Buccaneers in 2017 and played there for two years before injuries derailed things for him. He hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2018.

Lastly, there’s UDFA fan-favorite Smoke Monday. Upon signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, Monday bashed the Falcons and was seen repping a Drew Brees jersey. Those are two easy keys to Saints fans’ hearts. Monday should be able to make a splash with the team this summer and I wouldn’t be surprised if he passed both Sorensen and Evans on the depth chart.
