The New Orleans Saints wrapped up year 1 of the post-Drew Brees era while the future Hall of Fame quarterback went into the broadcasting booth for the first year of retired life.

Brees worked as a member of NBC’s “Football Night in America” and occasionally called games as well, including the AFC Wild Card matchup between the Bengals and the Raiders. His analysis was met with mixed reviews and over the weekend, it was reported that he’d no longer be working on NBC.

Andrew Marchard of The New York Post wrote that the amicable split between the two was that Brees wanted to call more games rather than be an in-studio analyst and NBC didn’t have the games available for the former Saints quarterback.

"On the air, Brees, 43, had an up and down rookie season that was highlighted by a poor performance in his biggest broadcast of the year, the Bengals-Raiders playoff game. While Brees is done with NBC, there is still a possibility he could end up in an NFL booth next year as Foxstill has to fill its top game analyst positions for this year as Tom Brady won’t start until after he finishes playing."

Drew Brees says he might not be done playing football

On Sunday evening, Brees tweeted out about the speculation and left football fans raising their eyebrows with one sentence in particular. I’ll let you guess which one.

“I may play football again”

The last time we saw Brees suited up in the black and gold, his arm strength had clearly deteriorated from the torn labrum and playing in the league for 20 years.

Some might look at him as an easy upgrade from Jameis Winston but Brees didn’t have the deep ball ability anymore and that’s what NFL quarterbacks need to have at their disposal in today’s NFL. Brees was not the same quarterback during the 2020 season, throwing for under 3,000 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six picks in 12 starts.

Saints fans will always adore Drew Brees for what he did for the city of New Orleans but as far as a return goes, it’s probably not the answer in the Big Easy.
